Transparentis™ is the world's first successful attempt at making the text background of Windows® desktop icons transparent permanently, with no kludges or resident programs. If you run a pre-XP Windows operating system, you are stuck with opaque icon captions that cover your wallpaper. Or you use Transparentis™.

Why Transparentis™ is different There are other programs out there which can make your desktop transparent, but they are far from perfect: they work by applying a transparent style to the desktop on the fly, meaning the transparency is lost whenever your desktop is refreshed, which can happen automatically every few minutes. Others work around this problem by staying resident in memory and checking the color of your desktop several times a second, reapplying the transparent style whenever it is lost due to a desktop refresh. These programs not only consume valuable memory and processing time, but also introduce flickering and disturbing visual artifacts.
Transparentis™ blows competing programs away!
Based on proprietary research and technology
First of its kind in the world
Makes your desktop transparent permanently*
No resident programs or injected code
No resident dynamic-link libraries
No kludges
No traces whatsoever
(*) Transparentis™ may need to be reapplied after installing service packs or other major updates which replace critical system files.
How it works Unlike competing programs, Transparentis™ does not hide the problem with a kludge—it eliminates it right at its source. Versions of Microsoft Windows prior to XP do not have a setting for making the background of the caption of the desktop icons transparent, not even a hidden one. This said, our program does not alter any secret settings either. Transparentis™ is the result of hours of reverse engineering work on the Windows core.
Transparentis™ works by actually patching your operating system, forcing it to make your desktop transparent at all times. Because the patch is applied directly to the system files that are responsible for controlling the appearance of the desktop, no additional programs need to be running in order to keep the transparency in place. In fact, Transparentis™ may be uninstalled after it has done its job, and the transparency will remain. Windows will actually think that's the way it was always supposed to work!
Because Transparentis™ works by modifying your system files, its effect may be temporarily lost if these are replaced at a later time, for example due to the installation of a service pack or another major Windows update. Should this ever happen, running Transparentis™ again will be enough to restore your desktop's transparency until the next service pack.
Supported operating systems Since Transparentis™ alters Windows binary code, it is operating system and service pack dependent. At this moment, Transparentis™ works only on the systems listed below. If you would like us to implement support for a different operating system and/or service pack, please let us know.
Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4
Windows Millennium Edition
Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows 95 OSR2 (Windows 95 B)
Important: Transparentis™ does not support Windows XP.
Frequently asked questions Is it safe to use?
Absolutely! Transparentis™ will never patch your operating system without first verifying that your system files are identical to those against which we tested the product. If, for some reason, your system files happen to be different from what the program expects, Transparentis™ will instruct you to contact us so that we can implement support for your particular system in the program.
Can the changes be reverted?
Of course. You can run Transparentis™ on a transparent desktop to revert it to its original opaque state.
May I try it out before purchasing it?
Unfortunately not. Since the effect is permanent and only one run is enough to make your desktop transparent until a new Windows service pack is installed, there would be no point in offering a trial edition.
I have made the background of my icon captions transparent with Transparentis™, but the text of my captions is white/black and is barely visible on my light/dark wallpaper. How do I change the color of the text?
Transparentis™ does not alter the way Windows picks the color of the text of your desktop icons. The text can be either white or black, depending on how dark or light your desktop color is (even if it is not visible when your desktop is transparent). To make your icon captions white, set your desktop color to black or another dark color. Analogously, to make the text of your icons black, set your desktop color to white or another light color.
